A married woman who sought a second divorce but ended up in court in a dispute with her husband over money found out the hard way that her heart is just as hard as the glass in her hand.

Samantha Baker, 45, was part of a crowd of hundreds who laid roses down at the cenotaph where three people, including a 6-year-old boy, died during Remembrance Day ceremonies on Saturday.

But her war memories made it hard to let down her guard.

“It’s really difficult when you’re this close to death. A lot of people think that’s really traumatizing but I’m used to death and dying. I’m used to it. I’m not traumatized by it. It’s very emotional when you’re that close to the cenotaph,” the 25-year-old told CBC News.

‘We’re going to run out of time’

On the way to the cenotaph, she tore off the top of a cheap necklace she was wearing, scooping up a handful of glass fragments.

Asked what she was thinking, she told CBC News: “My mind was obviously thinking about what I was doing, that I would die. I’ve been on edge for a long time… I wanted to do something special.”

Armed with her souvenir, she walked from the crowd to the cenotaph to lay down her five roses in the first hour of the program. She was the only one to do so.

Baker says she wouldn’t be surprised if she were to pass away tonight due to a medical condition. “We’re going to run out of time,” she says.

“I thought maybe my heart would stop or something. I don’t know, it’s hard to think about it. I guess it’s been two weeks since the accident.”
