There is also the need to design the architecture of cellular systems to make them reliable, easy to operate and maintain and to provide a cost effective solution to the problem of delivering a mobile telephone communications service to mobile users in a controlled and secure manner, with the system””s architecture being designed to enhance the service to the user, e.g. by providing features such as interconnectivity with other communications networks, enhanced security and fraud protection.
In the area of cellular system design there are various problems which are not closely related but which have their own particular characteristics. For example, one such problem is that of balancing the conflicting requirements of increased capacity and reduced size.
In view of the above, it is apparent that there exists a need for an improved cellular communications system which overcomes the above-mentioned problems and which provides a cellular communications system design with reduced complexity and with a robust design and architecture.
In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a cellular communications system comprising a plurality of base stations and a plurality of terminal stations interconnected by radio communications means, the base stations comprising: a) a master base station controller and b) at least one slave base station controller, the master base station controller being responsive to all controls and commands issued by the central processing unit of the communications system, the master base station controller being arranged to automatically or manually configure the slave base stations and to issue an alert to the central processing unit when a problem occurs in the communications system.
