I haven’t found anything on changing the escape character from double quotes to single quotes, but I can change the quote marks in the backing field that comes up in the properties window.
I was really confused by this in the beginning. It took me almost a month to understand everything and figure out the query, but once I found it, it was quite easy to work with.
Consider a simple test table, TestTable, with three columns:
ID, Test1, and Test2.
ID is a uniqueidentifier column, Test1 is a string, and Test2 is a uniqueidentifier.
By default, the “Test1” property is a backing field, and it returns double quotes.
Now, we need to add a “Test2” property that is a currency data type:
Or we can add the property in the designer:
There are several data types available to use in the backing field of a property, including
Testing for a double escape character (here, I used different backslashes: “\\” and “\\\”), you’ll notice that the property has the double quotes around its value. This means that there is a double-escape character in there.
Now, that’s a bit confusing, because in SQL Server Management Studio and by default the editor, SQL Server Management Studio doesn’t recognize double-quotes as a double-escape character, but the actual query has this value for the column, and on the next line.
So, based on that fact that the value of Test1 is a string, I tried a way of overriding the value of that property with some other value. I assumed that the data type of that property is String. I ran this query:
update TestTable set Test1 = Replace(Test1,'”‘,”)
I was able to correct the value of the Test1 property without changing the value of the backing field.
So, the root of the problem is that in the string property, the value to override actually is not a string, but a double-escape character.
I only went as far as trying to change the escape character in my case, but the problem here is that there are other ways of overriding the values for the properties of tables, which are not covered by the update command.
